Department of Sanskrit

The Postgraduate department of Sanskrit was started as a part of the then Patna college in 1919 with Dr Hari Chand, D.Lit (Paris), Dr A.P. Banerji Shastri, D.Phil (Ox) and Pt. Ramavatar Sharma as its distinguished teachers. They were well known researcher, writers and teachers as well. The department was then responsible for teaching Hindi, Bengali and Maithili, but later on these departments became separate in the forties. After the re-organisation of Patna University in 1952, a separate department of P.G. teaching in Sanskrit was taken over directly by the University and it was gradually shifted to newly purchased Darbhanga House 3 in the vicinity of Patna College. Several students of the department achieved name and fame in their lives. A few of them are Dr B.B. Shastri (D.P.I, Bihar), Dr T.P. Chaowdhary (HOD), Sanskrit, Ph.D. from London University, Dr Jayamant Mishra (V.C. KSDS University) Prof. Satyadeva (HOD, Sanskrit, Patna University, recipient of central overseas scholarship to U.K.) Dr R.K. Sharma (President, International Sanskrit Conference) Prof. Devendranath Sharma (V.C. Patna University) Prof. Dipti Tripathi (HOD, Sanskrit, Delhi University) Dr K.K.Mishra (Director, Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan, New Delhi. The department has also contributed in the administrative sector as many IAS officer such as Dinanath Panday, Pranav Kumar and IPS officers namely Dr Kishore Kunal, Gupteshwar Pandey, Dr D.K. Thakur, V.P. Kunwar have been a part of the department. Among its recent faculty, Prof. Kashinath Mishra (A President Awardee) and Prof. Parashuram Upadhya became VC in KSDS University, Darbhanga, Prof. Umashankar Sharma (a President Awardee) was invited to attend a religious conference in Kyoto and Horishima (Japan) in August 1997. The department of Sanskrit has published a book entitled Jain and Buddhist Traditions in Sanskrit with the assistance of the UGC in 2001 First Head: Mahamahopadhyay Ramavatar Sharma Present Head: Dr. Sudha Mishra
