Department of Mathematics

The department was established in Pre-Independence days. It is located in the front half portion of Mathematics / Statistics Block on Patna Science College Campus near the main gate. The department was shifted to this building in 1962. The department has one big conference Hall, two big class rooms and ten small rooms (teacher’s room, research scholar’s room and tutorial rooms). Classes for smaller group of students as research scholars are held in smaller rooms. There is a big departmental seminar library also with nearly twelve thousand books of pure and applied Mathematics. Several research journals are also available in the library.
Some of the eminent Professors who served the department were Prof. N. Nath (having several research publication as co-author with Prof. C. V. Raman), Prof. V. R. Chaniar, Prof. A. B. Prasad (both having several independent cited publication in the field of nuclear theory) Prof. R. Shukla, who later on became the Vice Chancellor of P.U., Prof. R. K. P Singh (a Professor of applied Mathematics with cited publication), Prof. S. K. Mishra (who later on became the Chairman of the University Service Commission), Prof. K. K. Jha (who also became the Vice Chancellor of P.U.) and many others, such as Prof. D. N. Sen & Prof. S. C. Dey who served the department from pre-independence days. The department is well known for its quality teaching in both Pure and Applied Mathematics. Fundamental research leading to Ph.D. degree is being carried out by two research scholars. The department has continued to keep the rich tradition of academic excellence and research work in Pure & Applied Mathematics till date. Papers, having citations, have been published in Journal of repute.
Some areas of research being undertaken by the Deptt. are Algebra, Topology, Measure Theory, Functional Analysis / Operator Theory in Pure Mathematics whereas in Applied Mathematics the thrust areas are Fluid Mechanics. Differential and Integral equation, Theory of Relativity, Integral transforms and Operation Research.
Students of the department have also participated in various cultural and sports activities. Time to time the department also organizes seminars based on various topics in Mathematics & Mathematics education.
