Department of Botany

The Department of Botany was established in July 1948, as an erstwhile part of Patna Science College. However, it attended the status of Postgraduate Department on 1st April, 1953. Since then, every attempt has been made to equip the Department for teaching, research and advance training. The Department of Botany, Patna University has been an acclaimed centre in the Eastern as well as Northern region of the Country towards teaching and research in Cytogenetics and allied areas of Botany, since 1953 under the leadership of Late Prof. R.P. Roy, FNA. Due to its significant contributions in aforesaid areas, this Department was selected under SAP and COSTST programs of the UGC in the year 1976 and 1988, respectively. A number of sophisticated instruments were procured for higher training and research in Cytogenetics and Microbiology as well as other areas of the subject. More than 500 research papers were published in the journals of National and International repute. Teachers of the Department are regularly publishing research papers in National and International journals. There is specialized teaching in four disciplines, viz., Cytogenetics and Crop Improvement, Biotechnology, Plant Biosystematics & Molecular Systematics and Plant Pathology & Microbiology. During the financial year 2010-2011, the Department of Botany, Patna University in collaboration with other Life Science Departments (Zoology and Biotechnology), has been sanctioned a grant of nearly 4.49 crores by the Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India, for infrastructure development as well as teaching and research up gradation, under the heading of DBT-IPLS. In this scheme, the existing labs were renovated and equipped with modern equipments. Ten scholarship and six fellowships each for the student pursuing M.Sc. and Ph.D., were also given. A Central Instrumentation Facility has also been developed to carry modern research in the field of Life science. The faculty members of the Department are regularly undertaking minor as well as major research projects funded by the UGC, DBT, DST, DAB etc. A major research Project entitled “Radiation Pre-treatment of Cellulosic Agro-wastes for Production of Bio-ethanol” by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Govt. of India. A research project entitled “Investigating Role of Bacterial Polysaccharide (glucan) in Modulation of Insulin Signaling using Celegans as a Model System” has been awarded as Start up research grant by the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India. A research project entitled “Mechanism of Anastasis in Cancer Cells: Its Impact in Disease Relapse and Therapy” has also been granted under DST SERB Young scientist Award programme. Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt. of India has sanctioned three projects under Women Scientist Scheme during 2011-12. The University Grants Commission has also awarded Post-Doctoral Fellowship to one student under women scientist scheme. The faculty members are regularly presenting papers in International conferences held in USA, Japan, Thailand, Singapore, Portugal and Spain. The Department has organized refresher courses for teachers and short term workshops to provide exposure to use and application of various instruments and analytical techniques. An all India level conference “The Indian Botanical Conference (IBS)” had been organized by the Department in 1987 The alumni of this Department have also attained a position of distinction in the field of teaching and research not only within the country but also in abroad. At least two dozen students of this department have attained highest distinction in reputed research laboratories/Centers/ Institutes in USA, Australia, Denmark as well as U.K. First Head: Prof R. C.
