Department of Bangla

The Bangla Department of Patna University was established in November 1956. The need for postgraduate studies was felt for a long time. It was through the efforts of Mrinalini Ghosh that this inspiration was realised. The Department commenced with four students on its rolls. The first full time Head of the Department was Dr Satyendranath Ghoshal who came from Vishwa Bharti. Both of them collaborated to ensure the facility of teaching in the postgraduate Department. Dr Biba Sengupta from the Department of Bangla was the first professor to assume headship at a time when eleven posts were created for the teaching of Bangla; two in each of the colleges and three in the masters programme.
The courses that were taught attracted a substantial number of students for the 50-marks Mother tongue Bangla Course and the 300-marks Pass Course. The first person to obtain a Ph.D. was Gurucharan Samanta after the introduction of doctoral programme in 1962. Till today 70 doctoral degrees have been obtained by researchers in the department. The areas covered have been prose writing, poetry, drama, novel, short story and individual writers, 19th century writing, Muslim characters in Bangla drama, Sufi influence in Bangla literature and cultural studies.
A numbers of programmes and important seminars have been organised by the Department that include Western Impact on Bangla Literature and Bihar in Bangla Literature, Social influences on Bangla Literature, Dwijendra Lal Roy as Poet and Dramatist, Twentieth century short stories, Class Consciousness in Bangla Drama and Rabindranath among others. A number of writers, poets and critics such as Bibhutibhushan Mukhopadhyay, Bimal Kar, Ujjwal Chakarborty, Ajit Kumar Ghosh, Layak Ali Khan, Sumita Chakravarty have engaged in significant academic exchanges.
